Point Spread
A point spread evens the playing field by handicapping the favorite. The favorite must win by more than the spread; the underdog can lose by less than the spread (or win outright) to cover.
What is a point spread bet?
The point spread is the most popular bet in football and basketball. The sportsbook gives the favorite a points handicap (e.g. -7.5) and the underdog a head start (+7.5).
How to read a spread
- Cardinals -7.5 means Cardinals must win by 8+ to cover.
- 49ers +7.5 means 49ers cover by losing by 7 or fewer, or winning outright.
- Hooks (the .5) prevent ties (called “pushes”).
Standard pricing
Most spreads are priced at -110 on each side; bet $110 to win $100. The 10% difference is the sportsbook’s vig (vigorish).
When to use spreads
- Football and basketball; the dominant bet type.
- High-spread games where moneyline payouts on the favorite are too small to be interesting.
