What is arbitrage betting?

Arbitrage betting (or "arbing") means placing wagers on every possible outcome of an event across different sportsbooks, sized so that you guarantee a profit no matter what happens. The opportunity exists when two books disagree on the price by enough to overcome the combined vig.

How to spot an arb

Convert each side's American odds to implied probability. If the sum is less than 100%, an arbitrage opportunity exists. Most arbs are 0.5%–2%; guaranteed but small per opportunity.

The math

For two opposing sides at decimal odds d_A and d_B:

  • stake_A = total × (1/d_A) / (1/d_A + 1/d_B)
  • stake_B = total × (1/d_B) / (1/d_A + 1/d_B)
  • profit = total × (1 − (1/d_A + 1/d_B)) / (1/d_A + 1/d_B)

Realities of arbing in Arizona

  • You need accounts at multiple AZ books. All 13 are licensed and let you withdraw; but sportsbooks do notice arbing and may limit accounts that consistently bet only the off-market line.
  • Line moves fast. Arbitrage windows close in seconds for big games. Slower for niche markets.
  • The math has to hold under fees. ACH transfers are free; debit card deposits sometimes carry issuer fees that eat into thin arb margins.
  • Stake sizing matters. Too small and the profit doesn't justify the time; too large and you'll get flagged.

Common arb scenarios in AZ

  • Local market mispricing; when a small AZ book (like Bally Bet or Unibet) hasn't moved a Cardinals or Suns line that's already moved at FanDuel/DraftKings.
  • Boosted odds; sportsbook-promoted odds boosts can create temporary arbs against other books' standard lines.
  • Live in-play; bet365 vs other books often diverge during live action.

The catch

Arbing requires consistent attention, multiple-book bankroll, and accepting that you'll be flagged and limited over time. Most serious bettors treat arbing as a stepping stone to +EV betting; using no-vig fair lines and Kelly sizing to bet single sides at the best price available.
